Your responsibilities

  • JOB PURPOSE:
  • The Secondary Learning Support Assistant Teacher will provide an adapted instructional program by collaborating with classroom teachers and the Learning Support Coordinator to advance the academic and behavioral development of a specific student in the Learning Support Department. Additionally, the Learning Support Assistant may be expected to work with and support other students within the Learning Support Department.
  • DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • ● Use various strategies and techniques to support the student’s ability to participate in class lessons to the greatest extent possible. This includes modifying the curriculum in core academic subjects.
  • ● Prepare various teaching aids needed to support student learning (visual schedules, reward charts, etc).
  • ● Collect data on the student’s goals for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and engaging in data-based decision-making.
  • ● Supervise or lead small group instructional activities as appropriate and directed by the Learning Support Coordinator.
  • ● While the main function of the assistant is to support the development of a specific student, the assistant teacher may be directed to support other students in the class as appropriate.
  • ● On occasion, the assistant teacher may be required to work with the student in an environment other than the main classroom (Ex: an area where the child can be more physically active or a smaller room where the student can focus) until the child can join the regular class again.
  • ● Participate in parent meetings with the Learning Support Case Manager as necessary.
  • ● Maintain a calm demeanor and deliver consistent consequences for inappropriate student behavior (restorative justice, time-outs, etc).
  • ● Reward student behavior that meets expectations (smiles, high-fives, verbal praise, and other rewards as necessary).
  • ● Intervene in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions.
  • ● Assist the student all day, including during specialist lessons.
  • ● Assist in the maintenance of the classroom organization (e.g. tidying, filing, etc).
  • ● Effectively apply the most up-to-date, research-based strategies to address the needs of diverse learners with the support of the Learning Support Coordinator.
  • ● Supervise the student off-site on school trips and other external visits.
  • ● Collaborate positively with all school community members (students, colleagues, parents, leaders).
  • ● Model the skills and attitudes of global citizenship, antiracism, and intercultural sensitivity.
  • ● Support and promote the school’s shared understanding of high-quality learning, mission, and learning goals.
  • ● Work cooperatively with parents to create strong partnerships.
  • ● Attend school-sponsored events & activities.
  • ● Participate in the after-school activities program.
  • ● Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Our requirements

  • Degree in Education from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s Degree minimum, Master's Degree, and Special Education certification/specialization preferred.
  • Successful previous experience working with students with learning disabilities preferred.
  • English Language Proficiency.
